Bob Brookmeyer
&
Kenny Wheeler
– Island (Artists House)
This release is a revolutionary concept. Not only is there a CD of the
music recorded by these venerable jazz masters, but there is a DVD and
also MP3 recordings with so much information and insight that it is
amazing. The price is competitive for a CD alone. For those who do not
know it, Bob Brookmeyer is a valve trombonist-curmudgeon with ties to
Gerry Mulligan in the pianoless quartet days after Chet Baker and later,
Stan Getz. Kenny Wheeler is a Canadian born trumpeter
who has lived in England for many years playing in big bands and
avant-garde ensembles. He has a distinctive
(2 notes and you've got it) style,
a tremendous range without burdening the listener with screeches; and
he plays better than almost anyone. This
music is so good that you have to own the whole
package. When you get around
to it, check out all of the multimedia features and then you will wish
you had all of this stuff on everything else you ever have bought. It
takes you right to the hearts of the players.
