Gary Burton is well known to South Florida JAZZ audiences, as he serves as the organization’s artistic advisor and has played for SFJ in notable performances with Chick Corea and Makoto Ozone. On this occasion, he presents his Next Generation quintet of which he is dutifully proud, since he mentored all of these musicians while all were at Berklee College of Music in Boston, a renowned institution where Gary served as an educator and administrator for 33 years.

Largely a self-taught vibraphone virtuoso, Gary Burton has been a major innovator on his instrument having mastered a much-copied four-mallet technique. His jazz career began with notable stints with George Shearing and Stan Getz before branching out with his own bands on the cusp of the jazz-rock fusion movement, a mere point on his impressive career curve. As an outstanding technician and improviser, he has played in numerous creative styles with a variety of luminaries, particularly Chick Corea and Pat Metheny as of late. Along the way he has garnered six Grammy Awards and numerous accolades as the premier vibist of his era.

Next Generation features guitar savant Julian Lage, who came under Burton’s tutelage at age 15, just a few short years ago. He already is carving out an active solo career because of his impressive musical maturity, dexterity, warmth and taste, despite his tender years. Ukrainian born, classically trained pianist, Vadim Neselovskyi, came to Berklee to polish his jazz chops after a German music education, but with an ingrained personal jazz orientation. He is a strong player and composer given to writing suites more so than tunes. His improvisations are deeply rooted in the classics and he is a superior artist. The amazingly talented bassist Luques Curtis has already collected a Grammy Award playing with Eddie Palmieri, while inventive and fresh-sounding drummer, James Williams, a consummate ensemble player, has the ability and equally importantly, the desire to make everyone around him sound better.
