abercrombie_john.jpg Nuttree is a quartet comprised of some of New York’s best veteran players, all of whom are in such demand that it hard to put them on the same date. Under the direction of drummer Adam Nussbaum, the group features master players on every instrument.

Best known of the players is guitarist John Abercrombie , who formed binding associations with the Brecker Brothers, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland and other artists on the ECM label, in addition to his friend, Adam Nussbaum. John’s style is infused with the traditions of Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt, retaining his fondness for jazz standards, while incorporating the evolving technology.

Boston native Jerry Bergonzi was introduced worldwide in two stints with Dave Brubeck (the quartet and the Two Generations of Brubeck band) as the successor to Paul Desmond. Jerry is a dynamic player, equally comfortable in small groups and big bands. His smooth, even tone is coupled with fiery or luscious phrasing and controlled power. He is without question among the best saxophonists on the jazz scene.

Gary Versace took his masters degree from Eastman School of Music, moved to NYC in 2002 and rapidly became one of the busiest and most versatile musicians on the scene as a pianist, organist, and also an accordionist (Maria Schneider’s orchestra). He is in demand by a number of bandleaders including Adam Nussbaum, John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Matt Wilson, and many others. His style is distinctly contemporary and pianistic, with clear articulation and a deft touch to his provocative harmonic texturing.

Leader Adam Nussbaum has enjoyed a cutting-edge a drumming career playing with John Scofield, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Eliane Elias, Dave Liebman, and even the Gil Evans Orchestra. He has long been associated with John Abercrombie. South Florida JAZZ audiences likely recall a memorable quartet performance at Hollywood’s Anne Kolb Nature Center. Adam is impish at the microphone and explosive on the drums.

The Nuttree Quartet brings a fresh sound and feel to the historic repertoire that most serious listeners associate with jazz – The Real Book.
